Trial pilot, squadron leader (retired Wing Commander) became the first astronaut of the Indian Air Force, India, and the 138th astronaut in the world.

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma life story is a former test pilot and first Indian astronaut. After a long service, he retired as the Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force. On April 3, 1984, he created a new record when he flew to the Soviet space station at Low Orbit and spent seven days at the space station. Thus he became the first astronaut of India. Rakesh Sharma also photographed several parts of India during this joint space mission of India and Soviet Union. With this space travel, he became the 138th astronaut in the world.

Rakesh was very interested in science since childhood. It was his habit to make spoiled things and monitor electronic things closely.

When Rakesh grew up, he used to see the airplane flying in the sky till it disappeared from his eyes. Soon Rakesh wished to fly in the sky, then he turned to that side.

Early life  : –

Rakesh Sharma was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala, Punjab, in a Hindu Gaud Brahmin family. Her father’s name was Devendra Sharma and mother’s name was Trupta devi Sharma. Originally from the Loknathka Brahmin family of the city of Srimadhopur in Rajasthan, his father immigrated to Punjab many years ago. He got his early education at St. George Grammar School, Hyderabad. After this he graduated from Osmania University in Hyderabad.

He was selected in 1966 at the National Surksh Academy (NDA) and joined the Indian Air Force as a cadet. After passing the NDA, he joined the Indian Air Force as a test pilot in 1970. Rakesh moved forward after joining the Indian Air Force at the age of only 21 years.

Rakesh Sharma achieved significant success with his aircraft “Mig Air Croft” during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, which was discussed after the war with Pakistan. After this war, Rakesh Sharma came into the limelight and people praised his ability. Sharma had shown how great work can be done even in difficult circumstances. On the strength of his ability and hard work he kept moving forward.

Meanwhile, on 20 September 1982, he was selected for a joint space mission of India (Indian Space Research Center) and Soviet Union (InterCosmos) under which he was going to get a chance of space travel.

In 1984, Rakesh Sharma was in space for eight days under a joint space mission of the Intercosmos Program of the Indian Space Research Organization and the Soviet Union. He was the squadron leader and pilot of the Indian Air Force at that time.

Space travel  : –

After selection in this joint space mission of India (Indian Space Research Center) and Soviet Union (Intercommos), Rakesh Sharma was sent for space training in Baikanur in Kazakhstan, Soviet Union. Another Indian’s Ravish Malhotra was also sent with him. After training, the day has finally come, which all Indians were waiting for. April 3, 1984 was the historic day when the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft flew with three astronauts from Baikanur in the then Soviet Union. In this space team, in addition to Rakesh Sharma, the commander of the spacecraft Y. V. Malyshev and flight engineer G. Were M. Struckloff. The spacecraft Soyuz T-11 successfully transported all three passengers to the Soviet Russia’s Orbital Station Seleut-7.

Rakesh Sharma spent a total of 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes in space. This space team conducted 43 experiments, which included scientific and technical studies. On this mission, Rakesh Sharma was given the responsibility related to the field of bio-medicine and remote sensing.

During this space trip, the flight team held a joint television news conference with Soviet officials in Moscow and then with the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. When Indira Gandhi’s asked Rakesh Sharma, “What does your India appear as if from space?” Then he replied by, “Sare’s Jahan’s Se Achcha Hindustan hamara”. With this mission, India came under the category of manned countries. India became the 14th country in the world to do so. This momentous moment was witnessed by millions of Indians on their television sets.

After this Rakesh Sharma retired as a wing commander from the Indian Air Force and started working as a test pilot in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. He served as Chief Test Pilot in the Nashik division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited till 1992.

Rakesh Sharma was also associated with the development’s of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas’.

The honor  : –

After returning from space, the Soviet government honored him with the ‘Hero of Soviet Union’. The Government of India honored him with the highest gallantry award of peace, the ‘Ashoka Chakra’. On his retirement as Wing Commander, Rakesh Sharma worked as a test pilot with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

In November 2006, he participated in a committee of the Indian Space Research Organization, which approved a new Indian space flight program.

Personal life  : –

Rakesh was married to Madhu Sharma, daughter of retired Army Colonel PN Sharma. Both of them learned Russian during their stay in Russia. His son Kapil is a director and daughter Kritika a media artist.
